Erectile dysfunction
Traditionally, erectile dysfunction has been known as "impotence", but these days the problem has been medically recognised as being a whole lot more involved than just having trouble maintaining an erection.
What is erectile dysfunction?
It is a topic almost impossible to avoid these days, with most types of media singing the erectile dysfunction song and promising treatment miracles.
But for those who suffer with the problem, admitting you need help is often much tougher than actually finding it.
Erectile dysfunction occurs when the blood vessels of the penis suffer from reduced blood flow - possible due to;
- Nervous system illnesses;
- Degenerative diseases;
- Recent surgery;
- Drug or medication usage; or
- Blood pressure problems.
At times, erectile dysfunction can happen without any of the above problems being present, but it is when the symptoms begin to become more frequent, that the patient should seek medical help.
How do I know if I have erectile dysfunction?
Generally speaking, if a male fails to get or maintain an erection on 5 successive occasions, it is recommended they seek medical advice. However, do not despair. Sometimes the problem can be easily resolved, and can be as simple as adjusting blood pressure medication, or finding some techniques to deal with anxiety and panic attacks. As a rule, if it worries you, get it checked out.
If erectile dysfunction has become a worrying factor for you, then it is best you get some advice about what could possibly be causing the problem, and how you can deal with it.
What can I do to help erectile dysfunction?
There are several treatments available for those who suffer from erectile dysfunction. For those who wish to seek help for erectile dysfunction, your medical professional may recommend;
- Medication - there are several options;
- Penile injections;
- Surgery;
- Anxiety counselling;
- Devices; and

The most positive factor to realise is that these treatments have come ahead in leaps and bounds over the past decade - and medical technology is always improving.
